1858 Burma Burmese Defeated Evil Lounging Polygamy Sister Throne Theebaw Thibaw

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the enigmatic figures of King Thibaw of Burma (r. 1878-1885) and his consorts, Queen Supayalat (centre) and her sister, during a period of great turmoil in Burmese history. The image, taken between 1858 and 1916, portrays the defeated monarch and his queens in a relaxed setting, lounging on a grand throne. However, the serene atmosphere belies the tumultuous events that unfolded during Thibaw's reign. Born in 1837, Thibaw ascended to the Burmese throne following the death of his father, Mindon Min. Known for his extravagant lifestyle and polygamy, Thibaw married over 100 wives, including Supayalat and her sister, who were daughters of a powerful minister. Thibaw's reign was marked by increasing foreign interference, particularly from the British, who sought to expand their colonial holdings in Asia. In 1885, the British launched the Third Burmese War, which resulted in the capture of Mandalay, the last Burmese royal capital. Thibaw and his family were exiled to India, marking the end of the Burmese monarchy. In this photograph, the once-powerful king and his queens appear as relics of a bygone era, their regal bearing a stark reminder of the rich history and culture that was being lost to the inexorable march of colonialism. The haunting image invites us to reflect on the complexities of Burmese history and the human stories that lie beneath the historical narrative. The photograph is a poignant reminder of the enduring legacy of the Burmese monarchy and the indelible mark it left on the world.
