Moving the lions at the Zoological Society's Gardens, 1876. Creator: Unknown
Moving the lions at the Zoological Society's Gardens, 1876. Lioness in her new home. The lions, tigers, and panthers of the Zoological Society's collection in the Regent's Park Gardens were last week removed from their old lodgings...to the spacious building lately constructed...The animals were enticed into a movable den or cage, placed close to the opened sliding-door of their old permanent dwelling; and, when thus secured, it was easy for the keepers to convey each beast, in its portable cage, to the new house...where it soon entered the chamber designed for its occupation. There was, indeed, some trouble and delay in overcoming the cautious distrust of some of these wild creatures; but the patient gentleness of the keepers, under the superintendence of Mr. Bartlett, succeeded in this delicate task without any mishap'. EDITORS COMMENTS
is an intriguing photograph that captures a significant moment in the history of London Zoo. The image depicts a lioness being carefully transported from her old enclosure to a new, spacious building. The animals, including lions, tigers, and panthers, were relocated from their previous lodgings to the newly constructed accommodation. The photograph is a testament to the advancements in animal care and housing during the 19th century. The animals were enticed into movable cages, which were then transported to the new house. The process was not without its challenges, as some of the wild creatures were hesitant to leave their familiar surroundings. However, the patience and gentle approach of the keepers, under the supervision of Mr. Bartlett, ensured a successful transition without any mishaps. The photograph is an educational artifact that provides a glimpse into the past, offering insights into the treatment of animals in scientific institutions during the Victorian era. It also serves as a reminder of the evolution of zoos from mere tourist attractions to institutions dedicated to the conservation and education of wildlife. The image is a poignant metaphor for change and progress, as well as a reminder of the important role that zoos play in preserving and showcasing the natural world. The photograph is an engraving from the "Illustrated London News," a prominent 19th-century newspaper, and is a valuable addition to any collection of historical images, particularly those related to the natural world, scientific institutions, or the history of London. The photograph is a reminder of the rich history of the Zoological Society's Gardens and the important role it continues to play in the study and preservation of wildlife.
