EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning 18th century folio from the Bhagavata Purana, an ancient Hindu scripture, depicts the legendary tale of Krishna's victory over the demon Keshi. In the recto image, Krishna, clad in rich apparel and adorned with a crown, stands victoriously over the defeated demon, who is shown in the throes of death, with Krishna's hand around his neck, choking him. The demon, in the form of a horse, had been terrorizing the people of Vraja, and Krishna, the divine deity, had taken the form of a horse to lure the demon out and destroy him. The verso of the folio, in Dipak Raga, depicts a serene scene of Krishna in meditation, contrasting the intense action on the recto. The intricate details of the clothing, the use of gold and opaque watercolor, and the tactical representation of the scene showcase the skillful artistry of the unknown artist. This beautiful piece of heritage art, originating from India or Southeast Asia, is a testament to the rich cultural heritage of Vaishnavism and Hinduism, and a reminder of the enduring power of mythology in shaping the artistic and religious traditions of ancient civilizations.
