EDITORS COMMENTS
Conquest of German East Africa: On May 8, 1916, Belgian Colonel Philippe Molitor led the Forces Publiques, the Belgian military and police force, into Kigali, the capital city of Rwanda, marking the end of German control over the region. The Northern part of the Belgian Congo, now modern-day Rwanda, was a borderland between the two territories. This historic moment was captured in this photograph from "L'Album de la Guerre 1914-1919, Volume 2" published by L'Illustration, Paris, in 1924. In the image, Colonel Molitor is seen riding on horseback, accompanied by his men and dogs, as they enter the city. Native people and local animals can be seen in the background, adding to the panoramic scene of the event. This image is a testament to the military campaign in East Africa during the First World War, where the Allied forces, including the Belgians, fought against the German army to secure control over the region. The image is presented in a letterbox format and is a valuable historical record of this significant moment in African history.
