A quarter plate tintype photograph [note image is reversed]. A port quarter view believed to be of the Thames paddle steamer Queen Elizabeth (1895), up stream about to pass under Kingston Bridge. Her funnel has been hinged backwards to about 45 degrees in order to shoot the bridge span. On the bridge are two double-decker trams. The rear-most tram is advertising Van Houten's Cocoa and the front tram is advertising soap. In the foreground are a number of punts/rowing boats bows-to the river bank. A solitary man is standing near the punts, his right arm raised with his hand on the side of his head. His left hand is on his waist. Next to the bridge are a number of buildings with large advertising boards on the walls, partially obscured by the after saloon of the paddle steamer.); © National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the elegant paddle steamer 'Queen Elizabeth' (1895) as it gracefully navigates its way under Kingston Bridge, a scene frozen in time from 1895-1917. The artist behind this masterpiece remains unknown, but their skillful composition and attention to detail are evident in every aspect of this image.
The Queen Elizabeth's funnel is tilted back at a sharp angle, allowing it to pass smoothly under the bridge while two double-decker trams cross overhead. The advertisements on these trams - one for Van Houten's Cocoa and the other for soap - provide a glimpse into daily life during this era.
In the foreground, punts and rowing boats line the riverbank as a lone figure stands nearby, his hand raised to shield his eyes from the sun. Behind him, buildings with large advertising boards add to the bustling atmosphere of this historic moment captured on film.
This quarter plate tintype photograph offers a unique perspective on maritime history, showcasing not only the beauty of the Queen Elizabeth but also the vibrant energy of London's riverside community. It serves as a reminder of days gone by when steamers ruled the waters and bridges were marvels of engineering ingenuity.
