HMS Trafalgar in Grand Harbour, Malta, 1852 (pen, ink, wash, watercolour)
7342254 HMS Trafalgar in Grand Harbour, Malta, 1852 (pen, ink, wash, watercolour) by Mends, George Pechell (1815-71); 25.5x37.2 cm; National Maritime Museum, London, UK; (add.info.: Creator: Captain George Pechell Mends
H.M.S. Trafalgar / Capt. Greville - Malta / March 11th 1852'. A finely drawn port broadside view of the ship, from slightly aft and not completely finished, with her topmasts struck down and her rigging under refit after the storm she suffered in February (see PAI0863 and PAI0864). Unlike many of Mends's drawings, a good number of crew are included giving a sense both of activity and the ship's great size: her reflection in the calm water is also effective. She flies a blue ensign and has a boat lying astern and a local dghaisa alongside, and may be lying under the walls of Valletta (see verso of PAI0864 for a related view). EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print captures the majestic HMS 'Trafalgar' in Grand Harbour, Malta in 1852. The intricate details of this pen, ink, wash, and watercolour piece by Captain George Pechell Mends truly bring the scene to life.
The ship is depicted from a slightly aft angle, showcasing her size and grandeur as she undergoes refit after a storm in February. The topmasts are struck down, with crew members visible on deck adding a sense of activity to the scene. The reflection of the ship in the calm waters adds an extra layer of beauty to the composition.
Flying a blue ensign and surrounded by smaller boats, HMS 'Trafalgar' appears regal against the backdrop of Valletta's walls. This artwork not only captures a moment in history but also highlights Mends's skill as an artist in portraying both the technical aspects of naval architecture and the human element aboard.
As you admire this piece from National Maritime Museum in London, you can almost feel yourself transported back to 1852, witnessing firsthand the power and grace of one of Britain's finest ships at sea.
