EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the year 1710, offering a glimpse into the enchanting Four Woods near Sheffield. Commissioned by his Grace the Duke of Norfolk, this meticulously crafted map was skillfully surveyed by Thomas Smith of Worksop. The map showcases Beeley Wood, Boadinhousteds Wood (also known as Bowdon Housteads), Duxter Wood, and Treeton Wood or Oaken Cliff Wood. Although these woods are scattered miles apart and not accurately depicted in terms of distance or location, the footpaths within them are intricately illustrated. The inclusion of footpaths allows us to imagine strolling through these ancient woodlands, exploring their hidden treasures. The compass rose serves as a guide for orientation on this map while adding an elegant touch to its design. Delicate coloring distinguishes outlines and trees throughout the print, bringing life to each woodland area. Measuring approximately 70 x 57 cm in its original form, this remarkable piece is now preserved at Sheffield Libraries under arc04461. It offers a fascinating window into history and invites us to appreciate the natural beauty that once graced these lands.
