The seat of war in Denmark, 1864. Creator: Unknown
The seat of war in Denmark, 1864. 'The Map gives a correct outline of the Sundewitt Peninsula, including the fortified lines of Duppel on the nose of land between Als Sund (the Alsen Strait) and the small gulf called the Venning Bund, with the Isle of Alsen opposite...The Danish forces were posted along the road from West Duppel to Sonderburg, and in the ten redoubts or forts by which that road is protected, their seaward front also commanding the waters of the Venning Bund and the Broagerland shore. The Prussian heavy batteries...began, on the 15th of March, to bombard the Duppel forts. But on the 17th...they attacked the Danish position at Frydendal and West Duppel, and obtained possession of both those villages, with the Ruhenberg and Avnbierg hills; the last-named hill being within half a mile of the nearest Danish redoubt. The village of West Duppel is said to have been almost destroyed by the cannonade which the Danes have since kept up with a view to drive the Prussians out of it. Within the last few days, however, the Prussians have made a general attack upon the whole of the Danish lines, and have been repulsed'. From "Illustrated London News", 1864

EDITORS COMMENTS
**The Seat of War in Denmark, 1864**
This poignant photograph print captures a pivotal moment during the Second Schleswig War between Denmark and Prussia. The map-like image depicts the Sundewitt Peninsula, with its fortified lines at Duppel stretching across the Alsen Strait to Sonderburg. Danish forces are stationed along this road, protected by ten redoubts or forts that command both land and sea.
The scene is one of intense conflict as Prussian heavy batteries began bombarding Duppel's forts on March 15th, followed by a brutal attack on Frydendal and West Duppel villages. The once-quaint village of West Duppel lies in ruins, its residents forced to flee amidst the chaos.
The photograph also shows Ruhenberg and Avnbierg hills under Prussian control, mere miles from Danish redoubts. Despite valiant efforts by Danish forces to drive out their foes, they were ultimately repelled in a general attack on March 17th. This haunting image serves as a testament to the devastating consequences of war and its impact on innocent civilians caught in the crossfire.
